Srikanth made his entry into Telugu Cinema with ‘ Peoples Encounter ' in 1991. Now his prestigious 100th film ' Mahatma ' is getting ready under the direction of Krishna Vamsi relesing today. Srikanth and Krishna Vamsi gave the hit film ' Khadgam '. All this hyped the film a lot. Let us see how far the film stood up to expectations.

Story

Dasanna (Srikanth) is a rugged youngster who lives in a ‘basthi area’ and his life style includes only fights, daily intake of alcohol and non-veg. His livelihood depends on rowdism. In the process he happens to encounter an advocate Krishnaveni (Bhavana) who keeps on bailing him out whenever he gets into police case.

On the other hand a political rivalry runs between ruling party leaders Dattanna (Jayaprakash Reddy) and Kalarani (Jyothy). In the flow of events, Dasanna happens to become a tool between Datthanna and Kalarani.

But Gandhism attracts Dasanna all of a sudden. He stops alcohol, non vegetarianism and also fights. He starts the process of accepting mistake. How that affected him? How that helped his area? That forms rest of the story.

Performance

Srikanth came up with one of his best performances and he danced well and looks handsome. Bhavana was a wrong choice, she was not looking good in any angle, Jayaprakash Reddy was excellent. Uttej was upbeat, Paruchuri was normal, Brahmanandam was brief, Jyothi was sensuous, Charmee's song was good, Navaneet was sexy in her song, the others didn't contribute much to the film.

The director has come up with a thought provoking message and though the presentation was good, the narrative was not appealing overall. The dialogues had political satire, the script was okay, the screenplay was good. Background score was nice, two songs can be taken home, cinematography was brilliant, editing was crisp. Costumes were okay but the art department did a very good job.

Analysis:

The film came in with the Gandhian philosophy and has given a true picture of today's society. While the first half takes off with flying colors and keeps the audience engaged, the second half faltered at few places due to unwanted songs and a rather stale climax. However, the idea of bringing in Gandhiji was a good thought and the makers made it a point to convey it to the protagonist in a convincing manner. though there is lack of depth in the story , the film must be able to get its marks based on the word of mouth and due to the political genre. Lack of entertainment is another feature that will go against the movie.
